Gisborne Mothers will participate in this year's Global Big Latch On at World Breastfeeding Week this week.
On Friday, at the Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, the Big Latch will be held at 10am. One of the organizers, Janet McGuiness, said that this year's Latch On program is being organized by breastfeeding consultants from the hospital and community as well as by all Well Child providers, all of them non-profit organizations.
She said that the event was a collaboration that was not seen "in a few years".
Morning tea will be provided and there will be cash prices.
Also this year in the run-up to the Global Big Latch, there is locally a selfie competition for breastfeeding.
Mothers just need to take a selfie to breastfeed and download it on the Big Latch On – Tairawhiti event page with the #worldbreastfeedingweek hashtag.
Last year, the Big Latch On was held in Plunket, Gisborne, where women were invited to breastfeed and offer peer support to other breastfeeding women in the community. .
Almost 30 women, the highest attendance in years, participated.
