ISLAMABAD – A group of Commonwealth observers will arrive on Wednesday to observe the upcoming general elections in Pakistan scheduled for July 25.
The group led by former Nigerian head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, includes eminent personalities from different parts of the Commonwealth, with background in law, election administration, diplomacy, human rights man, civil society, politics and the media.
The Group's mandate is to consider the factors that affect the credibility of the electoral process.
Members will vote on the compliance of the elections with the standards of democratic elections to which all Commonwealth member states have committed themselves, with particular reference to the Commonwealth Charter, to national election legislation. and other relevant regional and international commitments.
Observers will also receive internal briefin The Electoral Commission of Pakistan, political parties, civil society, media and security officials will also hear the views of various other actors.
Members will be deployed in several areas for several days and will return to Islamabad in July. 24 prepare their report. The band would come back on July 30th.
"The Commonwealth Observation Group must act impartially and independently and be free to propose actions on institutional, procedural or other matters that will help the authorities concerned to organize elections in the future", said Secretary General Patricia Scotland

The Group will present its final report to the Secretary General of the Commonwealth. which will transmit it to the Government of Pakistan, the Electoral Commission of Pakistan and the political parties participating in the elections as well as the governments of all Commonwealth countries.
