MMR and polio vaccines reach Papua

Papua authorities distribute measles, mumps and rubella vaccines after a deadly epidemic in February

They also distribute polio vaccines in response to an outbreak in neighboring Papua New Guinea.

The Jakarta Post reports 21 of the 29 regencies and cities in Papua have received MMR vaccines.

A deadly outbreak of the disease reportedly killed 72 children in the remote district of Asmat between last September and February.

Meanwhile, the Papua Health Agency has distributed polio vaccines in 26 regencies, including the five that share a border with PNG.

An outbreak of poliomyelitis was confirmed in Papua New Guinea's Morobe province last month, 18 years after the country was declared polio-free

. An official from the Papua Health Agency said that several remote regencies have low vaccination rates and that local leaders need to do more to raise public awareness.
