Tourists arriving in Sydney on cruise ships could be greeted by cranes and containers from Port Botany instead of the arches of the Opera House and of Harbor Bridge

NSW Government Prepares Business Case to Develop Port Botany as Cruise Ship Hub to Meet Growing Demand After Federal Government Rejects Cruise Ship Plans to Land at Garden Island in Sydney Harbor.

Yarra Bay and Molineaux Point at Port Botany have been reported as potential new sites for a third cruise ship terminal in Sydney, as the Overseas Passenger Terminal and White Bay struggle to service the number of ships arriving in high season.

NSW Tourism Minister Adam Marshall said he was disappointed with the federal government's decision not to allow ships to dock at Garden Island. "But of course we do not own or control Garden Island, which is only controlled by the Commonwealth and they have the last word."

million. Marshall said Now that the plan had been formally rejected, it was time to explore other options that could include cruise ships crossing Sydney Harbor, allowing passengers to see key sights before to dock at Port Botany

. He said: "But on the international scale, there are many examples of cruise ports that are very far from the CBD of the city."

"Brisbane in particular is very far from the CBD, and certainly other ports in America and abroad are very far away."

M. Marshall said Sydney was "unique in the international cruise industry" for having an overseas passenger terminal in the heart of the city.

"This will continue to work, we will continue to increase the capacity of this terminal, but at the same time we must build new facilities to cope with the overflow of the peak season," he said.

The NSW government said it was also planning to develop ports in other cities, including Eden, Newcastle and Port Kembla.
