People in WA who have not been vaccinated against the flu are asked to act before the peak of the 2018 influenza season.

Health Minister Roger Cook said [19659002] "With the onset of colder weather, we expect an increase in influenza cases, the influenza season is expected to peak in August and there is still time to get vaccinated," he said. Cook said even young people and people in need of health care need to be vaccinated to protect other members of the community who may be at risk of developing complications from influenza [.]

19659002] "WA has now received additional Commonwealth vaccines, so if you have not been vaccinated yet, it's time to do it," he said.

While most recover after several days of influenza, some patients develop complications, leading to hospitalization and even death.

Complications of influenza can cause pneumonia, inflammation of the heart, brain or muscle tissue and multiorgan failure.

Young children, the elderly and people with certain diseases are the most affected.

Influenza vaccine is provided free of charge by vaccine suppliers to eligible groups, including young children, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, pregnant women, seniors 65 years of age and over people with chronic diseases. Eligible for the free vaccine can be obtained by their doctor or at a participating chemist.
