A North Carolina-based hospital system has laid off 175 employees for failing to meet its COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
Novant Health had said last week that about 375 of its 35,000 members were violating the mandate and had been suspended without pay for five days.
Team members who remained non-compliant after the suspension period would have their employment terminated.
In a statement to The Hill on Tuesday, the hospital system said about 200 more team members have come into compliance since last week’s update.
Novant Health first announced its vaccination mandate on July 22. Under this mandate, employees had until September 15 to be fully immunized.
Employees with a medical or religious exemption are required to undergo a weekly coronavirus test and wear N95 respirators and protective eyewear when working on the premises.
The layoffs come as hospitals, universities and other employers increasingly mandate employee vaccinations amid the rise of the delta variant of the coronavirus.
In Houston Methodist, Texas, which was the first known hospital to make employee vaccinations mandatory, more than 150 workers have been laid off or quit after refusing to be vaccinated.
Similar layoffs took place at hospitals in New Jersey and South Carolina earlier this year.
