North Carolina lawmakers call for lieutenant governor’s resignation after video shows him labeling homosexuality “filth”

“I say it now, and I say it, and I don’t care who likes it – these problems have no place in school. There is no reason that anyone, anywhere in America, should talk to a kid about transgender, homosexuality – any of that dirt. And yes I called it dirt, and if you don’t like me calling it dirt – come see me and I’ll get you will explain it, ”adds the Lieutenant Governor.

When asked to comment on his statements, Robinson’s office said his remarks referred to education.

“The topics surrounding transgender and homosexuality should be discussed at home and not in public education,” his office said. “We need to focus on reading, writing and math in North Carolina. Our students struggled with these subjects even before the pandemic. Our primary focus must be on helping our students succeed, not on topics that should be discussed at home. “

Robinson told CNN affiliate WTVD that he is not talking about equality when it comes to sexual orientation. “We’re not talking about the fight for equality, and if these people want to challenge me on that, that’s good,” he said. “What I’m talking about are intimate details and, yes, there is material that is sharing intimate details about homosexuality, about sexuality in general, with our students. It has to stop.”

Democratic State Senators Jeff Jackson and Wiley Nickel called on Robinson to step down in light of the remarks.

“There is no debate here. It is open discrimination. It is totally unacceptable,” said Jackson, candidate for the US Senate in 2022, said in a tweet. “Mark Robinson should resign.”
Nickel added in a message that “Mark Robinson is a shame and an embarrassment to our state – he should resign immediately.”

“I stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ community and I hope you will join me in condemning this hate speech by the highest elected Republican official in our state,” he continued.

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s office told CNN in a statement that “North Carolina is a welcoming state where we value public education and the diversity of our people. It is abhorrent to hear from anyone, and especially a elected, use hateful rhetoric that hurts the people and the reputation of our state.
