The US military reported a record number of Covid-19 cases in one day, with 1,314 new cases on Tuesday, according to a US defense official familiar with the latest statistics from the Department of Defense.

There are currently around 25,000 cases in the ranks and 44,390 other service members have recovered from the coronavirus, according to the Pentagon. The increase in military cases has taken place in recent weeks as cases have also increased in the general population.

A U.S. defense official told CNN that the U.S. military has a 6.8% positivity rate, compared to a 9.98% positivity rate in the civilian population. The military has claimed since the start of the pandemic that it can maintain a lower positivity rate because the military has a younger, healthier population without the comorbidities. It can also impose restrictions in a way that the civilian world can not.

A little background: It comes as several military bases across the country have once again had to tighten sanitary measures to protect the force and military families.

In the Air Force, since November 10, a dozen installations have instituted more stringent measures known as Health Protection Condition Level Charlie, just a notch below the more stringent level.

While commanders can make detailed decisions about their bases, under this measure Charlie, schools, daycares and community activities can be canceled, there will be travel restrictions and more personnel can be ordered to work from home. In addition, family activities may be limited to homes for an extended period.

The impact is being felt at facilities across the country and around the world.
