State health officials confirmed 4,613 more cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, pushing six days this month into the state’s record for the most cases since the start of the pandemic. That brings the number of active cases statewide to 45,390. This is based on 105,845 new molecular tests reported Wednesday, according to the Department of Public Health.
There have now been 225,787 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts since the start of the pandemic.
Officials also announced 46 other COVID-related deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 10,588 since the start of the pandemic.
The number of hospitalizations linked to COVID has increased to 1,259, including 264 patients in intensive care.
Although testing has steadily increased, the seven-day positive test average continues to climb every day and has risen to 4.94% today, from 0.8% in September.
Gov. Charlie Baker said on Tuesday that state health officials had identified 36 cluster outbreaks in places of worship in Massachusetts. Those clusters have led to 316 confirmed cases and 150 close contacts, Baker said.
“As with all gatherings, protocols have been put in place to ensure that services and other functions that take place in places of worship are conducted as safely as possible,” Baker said Tuesday.
Baker said state officials “for the time being” will no longer be implementing COVID-19 “closures or restrictions” following rumors that new measures were being considered, adding that the public would receive a ” clear notice ”if other restrictions come into effect. .
“We will continue to monitor public health data closely and continue to make decisions based on it,” Baker said.
The latest figures come days after Moderna announced it would seek emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its prototype vaccine, which has been shown to be 94% effective in clinical trials. .
Moderna’s vaccine, mRNA-1273, is the second to be submitted to the federal agency for emergency use authorization after Pfizer and BioNTech filed two weeks ago. Phase 3 clinical trials of this COVID vaccine found the immune candidate to be 95% effective.
