Syracuse, New York – Five residents of Onondaga County have died from Covid-19 since Tuesday, County Director Ryan McMahon said today. The last time the county experienced five or more coronavirus deaths in a day was June 4, almost six months ago.
The deaths included an 86-year-old woman and four nursing home residents for whom county authorities had no demographic information.
“Brutal day,” McMahon said in a tweet.

The county also set a record for new daily coronavirus cases with 288, McMahon reported. And the number of Covid-19 patients in local hospitals has risen to 175, also a record. That’s 20 more hospital cases than Tuesday. There are 31 patients in intensive care.
McMahon said local hospitals still had adequate capacity despite the influx of coronavirus patients. There were 583 beds available this afternoon at Syracuse’s three major hospitals, he said.
“We’re still in good shape” for hospital beds, he said.
Onondaga County has confirmed 5,554 cases of the coronavirus since October 31, more than half of all cases since March.
The average rate of positive tests in the county over the past seven days was 4.8%. This means that nearly one in 20 people tested was infected with Covid-19.
Inside the county’s Orange Zone, which includes most of the city of Syracuse and some interior suburbs, the seven-day positive test rate was even higher, at 5.81%. In the yellow area of the county, the rate was 5.5%.
