According to data from two large 30-year studies, optimists live much longer than pessimists. Why? The seemingly optimistic people eat better, exercise, manage their stress more effectively and generally lead a healthier life. Goody good for them. Science:

… Scientists were able to show that the most optimistic women (the richest 25%) lived on average 14.9% longer than their more pessimistic peers. The results are a little less dramatic for men: the most optimistic group live 10.9% longer than their peers, on average, reports the team today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Optimism is associated with exceptional longevity in 2 epidemiologic cohorts of men and women" (PNAS)
