Oregon health workers administer COVID vaccine to roadside drivers after snowstorm left them stranded and drugs nearly expired

Oregon health workers who got stuck in a snowstorm after returning from a COVID-19 vaccination event went from car to car to inject stranded drivers before several doses expired.
Josephine County Public Health said on Facebook that the ‘impromptu vaccination clinic’ took place after around 20 employees were stopped in traffic on a freeway after a vaccination clinic at Illinois Valley High School .
Six of the vaccines were about to expire, so workers decided to offer them to other stranded drivers.
The injections were meant for other people in Grants Pass, but “ the snow meant these doses would not reach them until they expired, ” the health department said.

Not wanting to waste them, staff walked from vehicle to vehicle, offering people a chance to receive the vaccine. A county ambulance was on hand for security.
All the doses were administered, including one to an employee of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office who arrived too late for the vaccination clinic but ended up stopping with the others, officials said.
Josephine County Director of Public Health Mike Weber said it was one of the ‘coolest surgeries he’s been on’.
While six doses may not seem like many, every vaccination counts in the battle against COVID-19.

According to a dashboard being updated by the Oregon Health Authority, 340,359 doses of vaccination had been administered in the state as of the end of Tuesday.
So far, only 50,587 people in the state are fully vaccinated, which means they have received both doses of a coronavirus vaccine.
This week alone, educators and those who work at a K-12 school facility became eligible to receive the vaccine in Oregon.
Oregon has recorded 139,355 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. Of this total, 1,904 died from the virus.
