In 1963, the American philanthropist Frieda Heller was treated in the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) because of a recently detected tumor. While waiting for the diagnosis, he witnessed the large number of people who slept in the facilities of the place. Intrigued by what she saw, she asked what was the scenario. "These are people who come from the interior of the country to take care of themselves and have no place to sleep," he replied in response.
Where Charm Is Born
It's here that it all started. With the oncologist Eduardo Cáceres Graziani, Frieda Heller founded the shelter that now bears his name and which receives low-income patients from different parts of Peru to be treated in INEN . Psychologists, nurses, educators, social workers and volunteers form today the multidisciplinary team of the Frieda Heller hostel, bringing love and joy to patients up to the age of 90 .
To make this possible, the collection Ponle Corazón ] raises funds for housing expenses in the shelter, as well as food, transportation to INEN medicines and prostheses. Regardless of donations of equipment to oncology hospitals in Lima and the provinces or leisure workshops that more than 150 volunteers offer in weaving, painting, storytelling and more. "The best way to fight cancer is with a lot of love." Making patients interested in developing new skills gives them the courage to fight the disease, "says Ana María Chacaltana, Fundraiser and Volunteer.
This year, the collection invites large, medium and large companies to participate in their new campaign # DuplicamosElCorazón so that more and more cancer patients can have access to quality care.
