PHILADELPHIA CREAM – The CDC says Philadelphia and three suburban counties are now seeing “substantial” community spread of COVID-19.
According to the CDC’s Data Tracker, “substantial” transmission means there have been 50 to 99.99 total new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days.
As of Monday, Philadelphia, Bucks, Delaware and Montgomery counties were among 609 counties in the United States to fall under the substantial transmission category, while 1,923, or nearly 60% of U.S. counties fall under “high transmission.” .
Data from the CDC shows that the number of new cases in Philadelphia last week increased by more than 14% from the previous week, to 52.33 new cases per 100,000 people. The new cases per 100,000 people in the other three counties are listed below:
- Bucks County – 56.19 per 100,000
- Delaware County – 55.23 per 100,000
- Montgomery County – 59.93 per 100,000
According to the city’s Vaccine Dashboard, 62% of adults in Philadelphia, ages 18 and older, have been fully immunized. Additionally, 75% of adults 18 years of age and older received at least one dose.
At the end of last month, city officials strongly recommended that everyone resume wearing masks indoors, regardless of their vaccination status.

Acting Health Commissioner Dr Cheryl Bettigole joins Good Day Philadelphia to discuss the city’s recommendation for indoor masks regardless of vaccination status.
The recommendation came after Acting Health Commissioner Dr Cheryl Bettigole cited a “slight but worrying” increase in hospitalizations and a doubling of cases due to the Delta variant and COVID-19 infections in children who are not eligible for the vaccine.
In addition to masking indoors, the health department now suggests avoiding crowded spaces and moving gatherings outside when possible. Health officials also advocate wearing a mask around people with unknown immunization status.
