Philadelphia COVID-19: City Now Seeing ‘Substantial’ Level of Community Transmission of Coronavirus: CDC Data

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Philadelphia now sees what the CDC considers a “substantial” level of community transmission of COVID-19.

According to the CDC, the “substantial” category means 50 to 99.99 total new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days.

As of Monday morning, 62% of adults 18 and older were fully immunized in Philadelphia.

Last month, local health officials again strongly recommended that everyone wear masks in indoor public spaces, regardless of immunization status.

They also recommend:
– Choose outdoor rather than indoor spaces

– Avoid crowded indoor spaces
-Wear a mask indoors around people you don’t know are vaccinated
-Unvaccinated people should consider double masking when in indoor public spaces.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health issued a statement to Action News on Monday:

“On July 22, we instituted a strong recommendation that anyone over the age of 2 in Philadelphia should hide indoors in public places. The CDC has now endorsed this recommendation. All Philadelphians should pay attention to this warning to avoid the kind of surge seen in other parts of the country, which are seeing an increase in adult and child hospitalizations. The delta variant spreads more easily than previous forms of COVID-19, but this spread can be avoided by vaccination, masking, avoiding crowded indoor places and keeping away from others.None of these measures is fully effective on its own, so we recommend to superimpose the protections: get vaccinated and wear a mask indoors in public places.
