If there is one thing that Pokemon Co. would change in Detective Pikachu's movie, it could be a specific Lickitung scene. For those who do not know, there is a party where the Pokemon licks the actor Justice Smith. According to Erik Nordby, visual effects supervisor of the movie, Pokemon Co. was not really a fan of the moment.
We actually built this language with a big piece of latex. It's completely disgusting, but we needed something to erase Judge Smith's face. [the actor gets licked by Lickitung in one scene].
For something to be real, it must have a real texture and grain of the world. But the Pokemon society would see this and think it was dirty. We had to guide them through a series of slides and create the confidence that we were not going to get dirty.
I would not say that [the scene with Lickitung] was the favorite scene of the Pokemon company in the movie. This is one of the areas in which we went after what they would be comfortable with.
