ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Fair board members, volunteers and others are working hard at the Belmont County Fairgrounds despite the overcast weather and recent rains, preparing for next week’s fair.
This year’s event will feature an additional day, with opening ceremonies starting Monday at noon, which is Labor Day. Fair’s board chairman Ed Campbell said the extra day will allow young people to participate more.
“We added Monday to the fair this year for our opening ceremony,” he said. “Many children were unable to attend the opening ceremony due to the presentation of their animals. They could not participate in the royalty activity or they could not participate in the opening ceremony.
It will be a full fair after events were reduced to the Junior Fair last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have a lot of stuff to do here,” said Campbell. “We have a few new buildings this year. With our new entrance, everything will go through our main entrance to the office. Campbell said there will be hand sanitizer stations and hand washing stations throughout the exhibition grounds.
“At the moment, we are not planning anything (in terms of new mandates). We have spoken with the Ministry of Health. Everything seems to be going well, “he said.” A lot of people didn’t get out of this last year because of COVID. It will be something new for everyone this year.
He pointed out that concrete and asphalt have been laid on the exhibition grounds to provide better access for people with disabilities. There is also more concrete in chicken coops and barns and concrete sidewalks.
“A new Junior Fair building has just been built, so they will be in a brand new facility,” said Campbell. “They’ve been working in a small building since we’ve been here, and we thought it was time for them to modernize as well.”
Campbell said the additional space will allow for more storage and that members of the Junior Fair will no longer have to travel to and from the extension office. He added that the building was made possible by a donation of $ 35,000 from an anonymous donor.
He said there had been no difficulty in booking attractions and entertainment.
“We haven’t had a lot of trouble getting anything this year. We may be down with some vendors halfway when it comes to food vendors, ”Campbell said. “We are trying to bring back the same range that we had for 2019.”
Campbell doesn’t expect the economic blows that many have suffered as a result of the pandemic to negatively impact the ability of young people to raise and show animals.
The fair is scheduled from Sunday to Thursday with the configuration of the Junior Fair project on Sunday afternoon. The Mobile Glass Studio will be available from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and the baked goods auction will be available at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Zerbini Family Circus will perform Wednesday and Thursday, Rafter M. Rodeo will perform Wednesday at 6 p.m., and Taylor Jo and the Copper Creek Band will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
On Thursday, Fair Field Day is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the Zerbinis performing again at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and the Hee Haw variety show at 7 p.m., featuring KOI Drag Racing.
