PARKVILLE, Md. (WJZ) – A rabid raccoon was found in Parksville on Wednesday. Now, Baltimore County health officials are asking anyone who may have been exposed to see a doctor.
County health officials say a dead raccoon was found in 2700 block of Summit Avenue in Strabane Court. It has proven positive for rabies.
If you or your pet have come into direct contact – bites, scratches or licks – with the raccoon, you should consult a doctor. Residents should contact the Baltimore County Health Department at 410-887-5963 during regular business hours. The number to call outside of normal business hours is 410-832-7182.
The Department of Health offers the following tips to prevent rabies contraction:
- Take into account the risk of rabies and other diseases before sheltering an animal, or interacting with an animal, especially if the house contains children, people suffering from certain diseases, the elderly or others. pets.
- Since rabies remains uncontrolled in nature, avoid contact with wildlife, stray or wild animals, especially if they appear to be sick. There is no safe contact with these animals with respect to physical injury, rabies and other diseases.
- Do not provide food, water or shelter to wild animals or stray animals. If you feed your animals outdoors, do not leave food or water dishes too long, especially during the night.
- People who are considering adopting stray or wild cats should consult a veterinarian for advice.
- Keep rabies vaccines up to date for all animals and do not let them roam freely.
