OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Baltimore Ravens have informed Michael Crabtree that they are releasing the veteran receiver after a disappointing season, said a source to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Crabtree, 31, was to receive a $ 2.5 million alignment bonus next month and earn $ 7.5 million in 2019 after leading the NFL with eight lost passes last season. Baltimore will release $ 4.667 million in payrolls by separating from Crabtree, which has made 54 catches (its smallest total since a full season since its rookie year in 2009) for 607 yards and three touchdowns.
The Ravens are looking to fill the receiver position for new franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson. Crabtree had 13 catches for 135 yards and one touchdown in seven starts with Jackson.
In addition to the departure of Crabtree, John Brown should leave in free agency. That would leave Willie Snead as the only wide-back receiver to have made more than 20 catches last season.
Baltimore signed a $ 21 million contract with Crabtree last March, under a three-year deal, in the hope that its catch would be difficult. But Crabtree struggled to catch the ball all season and dropped a potential touchdown pass at the last minute of regulation in a 12-9 overtime loss to Cleveland.
Crabtree, the tenth pick in the 2009 draft, played his first nine seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. His 28 touchdowns are the seventh in the NFL since 2015.
