Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman delivered a pre-Super Bowl LV poem honoring three “community heroes” chosen by the NFL to serve as honorary captains at the championship game.

His poem paid homage to educator Trimaine Davis, nurse director Suzie Dorner and Marine Corps veteran James Martin.

Read a transcript of his remarks below:

Today we honor our three captains

For their actions and their impact

A time of uncertainty and need.

They took the lead,

Exceed all expectations and limits,

Uplift their communities and neighbors

As leaders, healers and educators.

James felt the wounds of war,

But this warrior always shares

His house with children at risk.

During Covid, he even lent a hand

Live football for family and fans.

Trimaine is an educator who works tirelessly,

Provide its community with hotspots,

Laptops and technical workshops,

So his students have all the tools

They need to be successful in life and in school.

Suzie is the intensive care nurse manager at a Tampa hospital.

His chronicles prove that even in tragedy, hope is possible.

She lost her grandmothers to the pandemic,

And fight to save more lives in the ICU combat zone,

Define the frontline heroes who risk their lives for ours.

Let’s walk with these warriors,

Load up with these champions,

And continue the call of our captains!

We celebrate them by taking action

With courage and compassion,

By doing what’s right and right.

As we honor them today,

They are the ones who honor us every day.
