A record-breaking Cole Cabana day on Saturday afternoon helped the Dexter football team secure a well-deserved 56-27 victory over Monroe.
The teams met on Friday night and the game was called off after a quarter due to lightning in the area after an hour’s delay.
Monroe kicked off Friday night and drove onto the field for a TD run to take a 7-0 lead.
After a punt from Dexter, Monroe pushed in again, but Dexter’s defense held on and blocked a Trojan field attempt to keep him 7-0.
Cal Bavineau hit Braeden Fuson with a long pass to Monroe’s two-yard line on the last play of the first quarter when the game was suspended due to lightning. After an hour of delay, the game was rescheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Bavineau scored from two yards when play resumed Saturday to tie the score at 7-7 and Cabana took over from there.
Cabana scored on 26 and five yard carries to give Dexter a 21-7 lead and Bavineau hit Cole Darby with a seven yard pass and the Dreads have a 28-7 lead at halftime.
Monroe would rally in the third with a pair of scores to reduce Dexter’s lead to 28-20 before Cabana scored 10 yards to reach 35-20 after three.
Dexter forced a turnaround to start the fourth and Cabana would score three yards for his fourth TD of the game.
The Dreadnaughts would walk away with 41 and 60 touchdown points by Cabana to secure the huge victory.
Cabana finished with a school record 341 yards on 33 carries and six touchdowns. He has now scored 21 combined touchdowns on the ground and in the air for the season. He also caught four passes for 37 yards.
Bavineau had 14 passes for 22 passes for 129 yards and a score and rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Fuson caught four passes for 51 yards, Ty Rychener four for 23, Wyatt Novara one for 11 and Darby one for seven yards and one score.
The win was a well-deserved victory for the Dreadnaughts as they improved to 5-2. They travel to undefeated Saline on Friday night and host their undefeated rival Chelsea on October 22.
