Meet having captured Google’s full attention for the past year or so, Duo hasn’t seen a significant update in quite some time. Google Duo will soon receive a home screen overhaul that adds a “New Call” button which hopes to simplify the app.
This button is intended to serve as a starting point for key actions in Duo, including initiating calls to other users, as well as to your Home Assistant device and groups. You will also be able to see (and invite) contacts and create groups. The list of people can also be viewed via search.
Google hasn’t shared any images of what this looks like yet, but this latest incorporation made possible by the “New Call” button suggests that this homescreen will be much shorter than the current one.
The company stresses that it “keeps all the features you love” in the midst of this reorganization. You will be able to send messages (video or audio), a note or an image by tapping on a contact / group and clicking on the “Message” button, which is possible today.
Inspired by your feedback, we’ve taken steps to simplify the Duo home screen while still retaining all of the features you love.
Two current user interfaces
All in all, this allows for a pretty significant overhaul of the Google Duo home screen. It comes at an interesting time and after a period where all of Google’s attention has been focused on Meet. In particular, the company added all of Duo’s fun filters and effects directly to Meet in Gmail this month.
Duo’s “New Call” button will begin rolling out “over the next few weeks” (h / t Android Police). While no platform is specified, this will likely come first for Android and iOS mobile clients.
