Childhood director Richard Linklater makes an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's classic musical We ride happily, which will be performed by Ben Platt, Blake Jenner and Beanie Feldstein. We ride happily is a musical that describes the lives of three friends: Franklin Shepard, a Broadway composer; Charley Kringas, a songwriter partner of Frank; and Mary Flynn, writer and critic. The show traces the life and friendships of the trio for 20 years in reverse chronological order. It starts with three old characters, bitter and separate, then jumps from stage to stage and tells how they arrived until their friendship begins. Platt must play Kringas for the film, Jenner for Shepard and Feldstein for Mary Flynn.
Linklater's film adaptation will follow the same story, but it will be filmed in reverse, that is, in the usual chronological order. Playbill reports that the first part of the film (ie the final scenes) has already been filmed and that later pieces will be filmed over the next two decades.
Linklater is no stranger to long productions, of course. Childhoodhis 2014 acclaimed film was shot over 12 years, chronicling the real-life aging of actors in real time. The original scenic production of We ride happily made his debut in 1981 and ran for only 16 performances. But over the next few years, he has witnessed several times and productions around the world, including off-Broadway production of the Roundabout Theater Company in New York earlier this year.
