Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks are on the verge of divorce, according to a detailed report from The Athletic on Thursday.
“Some people around the league think a trade could happen, if not this offseason and then in the near future,” according to The Athletic.
Wilson could order as many as three first-round picks, according to multiple reports, and the 32-year-old has three years left on a four-year, $ 140 million deal he signed in April 2019.
The Athletic reported that the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and New Orleans Saints all have some level of interest in Wilson.
In a deep and in-depth dive into the rift between Wilson and the Seahawks, the report focuses on a difference of opinion between Wilson and the organization about the design of the offense and the personnel on the offensive line.
Wilson has responded to reports of his frustration with the Seahawks after the Super Bowl, a game he attended as Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year as a guest of Commissioner Roger Goodell. Wilson told “The Dan Patrick Show” that he was increasingly concerned about the nearly 400 career sacks he has taken in nine seasons.
“It’s a big thing that we have to fix. It has to be fixed,” Wilson said.
The Athletic Report said Wilson sent irritating text messages to Jake Heaps, a former teammate and private passing coach, during the game. It was a simmering position for Wilson who overflowed in a reunion according to The Athletic that ended with Wilson leaving the room before the Seahawks played in Arizona on Thursday night in November 2020.
According to the report, Wilson gave the team a glimpse of his ideas to correct the infraction, but head coach Pete Carroll shook him.
In the new report, multiple sources are interviewed and blame is assessed from those sources on either side.
A comment attributed by former running back Robert Turbin, who was at Wilson’s wedding, indicated that the quarterback’s well-being is at the center of the issues.
“The reason we’re here is because he’s on his way to becoming the most sacked quarterback in NFL history,” Turbin told The Athletic.
But another source, pointing to a two-game streak in which Wilson committed seven turnovers and Carroll reduced the attack, sided with Seattle.
“He’s finally catching the heat. That’s the main reason for it all,” the source said.
A coach from another team said: “It’s a great story. There is a lot going on there. Money, greed, power and control.”
