Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked is likely due out on August 11, although much of the event has been disclosed in its entirety. We know pretty much everything about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, we’ve seen the upcoming Samsung Galaxy watches, and we’ve got a rough idea of what to expect from the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2. A developer by the name of Tim Schneeberger comes by. de has found a first beta of the never-before-seen Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 plugin on Samsung’s update server, and it contains a lot of information about upcoming headphones. You might remember that the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro had leaked the same way before.
Schneeberger disassembled the app and shared all of his findings in a GitHub repository, and there’s a lot of information that wasn’t public before. While we’ve seen the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 inside and outside of their case before, the app also has photos of the headphones in black, white, gray / green, purple, and yellow. Yellow and gray / green are new and original colors. The app did not contain any battery case images except for a simple line drawing corresponding to the Buds Pro and Buds Live cases.
As a feature, the app adds a new feature to enable active noise cancellation in an earphone. The option is currently invisible in the app, and Schneeberger has speculated that it will be available if the app detects that the connected headphones have a certain version of firmware installed. There is also an interactive tutorial to help the user wear the headphones correctly (similar to Buds Live), and you can now enable / disable single, double, triple and touch actions individually.
The developer fixed the app to simulate a pair of connected Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 to see if there had been any changes or redesigns in the app, which there were. The battery dashboard has been redesigned and is easier to use. Keep in mind that some settings like Bixby voice wake-up and active noise cancellation in a headset are invisible in the screenshots below, but they do exist.
Compared to the Buds Pro, it lacks a few features. There is no 360-degree sound feature for one, nor “double-tap exterior volume controls” yet (although apparently there is still logic for this in the Bluetooth back-end) . There is no longer an “up / down” option for ANC either and you cannot fine tune it, but as already mentioned it will probably be possible to enable ANC even if only one earphone is connected. More detailed battery information is also present, as the app shows that each individual earbud has a capacity of 61mAh, while the case has a capacity of 472mAh.
The equalizer page is also the same, while the “find my headphones” page has been redesigned a bit.
The app shown here is a pre-release, and there may still be some changes to come before the actual release of the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2. Many favorite features of previous Buds are here or are being improved, and some features present in them. Buds Pro from last year weren’t featured in Buds 2. We may see a Buds 2 Pro coming later. in the year that will bring some additional features that have been left out. We know that the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 will be able to connect to multiple devices at once for seamless switching (something previous Buds couldn’t), which includes connecting to non-Samsung devices.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 have a pebble-shaped casing and each earbud appears to have two microphones on the outside. There are charging pins and optical wear detection sensors on the interior side, and there doesn’t appear to be many substantial changes from the Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Buds +. We’ve found the Samsung Galaxy Buds to be some of the best true wireless headphones you can get on the market, and we look forward to what the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 will bring to the table.
