Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event – what to expect

[ad_1]

After some initial hesitation, Samsung has confirmed that the next Galaxy Unpacked event will take place on August 11 and will be under the slogan “Get ready to unveil”. TM Roh, president of Samsung’s mobile business, left some clues about what we should expect: the first S Pen for a foldable device, bigger and more durable screens, improved multitasking, and closer collaboration. with Microsoft for software development.

You may have been following the countless leaks closely, but if not, here’s a rundown of what will be revealed on Wednesday. In short, two foldables (Fold and Flip), two watches and a new TWS headset. Let’s take a closer look at each.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

While there is no Note21, S Pen support has been added to the Galaxy S21 Ultra and is also coming to the Galaxy Z Fold3. The 7.6-inch internal display will be bigger than any Note phone so far, giving you more space to take notes or sketch out your ideas. However, the stylus will not integrate with the phone as well as with the Note models.

For example, you’ll need to charge it via USB-C, instead of charging it when you store it in the phone. This is because there is no room for a stylus inside the phone. Instead, there will be a special S Pen case that allows you to carry the stylus with the phone. It is not clear whether the 6.2 inch external display will support the stylus or not. By the way, there should be two supported styluses: the S Pen Pro (which is expected to cost £ 70 / € 80) and the S Pen Fold Edition.

The internal screen will also be Samsung’s first to offer a sub-screen camera. It will take 4MP photos, although those are likely pixels from a 16MP sensor. The external display will have a typical punch hole camera (10MP). As for the main camera setup on the Z Fold3, we expect to review a 12MP triple camera (wide, ultra-wide, telephoto).

The foldable will be powered by Snapdragon 888 and (possibly) an Exynos 2100, distributed in the usual territories. The chipset should benefit from better cooling than the S21 Ultra. The battery capacity will be 4,400 mAh, a little less than on the Z Fold2. Interestingly, the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 will be the first foldable to have water resistance with an IPX8 rating (up to 1m deep for 30 minutes or more).

According to the leaked prices, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 (256GB) will cost € 1,900 / € 2,000 in Europe, there will also be a 512GB model for around € 120 / £ 110 more. In the US, Samsung will allow you to swap two devices when purchasing a Z Fold3 or Z Flip3 (these can be phones, tablets, or watches). In India, the Z Fold3 will start at around INR 1,35,000.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3

The Galaxy Z Flip3 is expected to have a smaller body than its predecessor while maintaining the battery capacity at 3,300mAh. This year, Samsung could increase the wired charging speed from 15W to 25W (although some rumors say it will still be 15W). The same 25W charger will also be supplied with the Z Fold3.

The Flip will keep its internal screen size at 6.7 “, but the external screen will now be much more usable at 1.9” (it may contain a few lines of text instead of a few words). The camera doesn’t change, however, the phone gets the familiar dual 12 MP setup (plus a 10 MP selfie camera inside).

This phone will also be powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset. It’s not clear whether there will be an Exynos variant, there hasn’t been one in previous iterations.

Samsung will be launching a curious set of cases for the Galaxy Z Flip3, including leather (vegan), silicone and clear options.

Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic

Samsung will unveil two watches – the Galaxy Watch4 Classic with a hardware rotating bezel and the sportier (bezel-less) model Galaxy Watch4. Both will be available in large and small sizes with screens of 1.36 “and 1.19” respectively (resolution of 450 x 450 px in both cases). Additionally, battery life is expected to be up to 7 days with a 361mAh power cell in larger models and 247mAh in smaller timepieces.

Classic models will be made of stainless steel and measure 46mm and 42mm in diameter. The vanilla models will be aluminum and will be a bit smaller at 44mm and 40mm. Both models will have Gorilla Glass DX on the display, IP68 dust and water resistance (rated up to 5 ATM).

After years of using the internal Tizen operating system, the new watches will upgrade to Wear OS, but with One UI Watch 3.5 on top. This means that Google apps (e.g. Maps) will be available on the Watch4 series, as will the Google Assistant (and Bixby as well).

Samsung Health will be on board to count your steps, monitor your heart rate and blood oxygen (SpO2) level, there will also be an ECG function, and the watches will be able to analyze the wearer’s body composition.

The chip will be connected to 1.5 GB of RAM (compared to 1.0 GB on the Watch3 series) and will double the storage (16 GB).

European prices for the Watch4 are expected to start at € 280 for the 40mm model and € 310 for the 44mm model. The Classic version will cost € 380 for a 42mm watch and € 410 for a 46mm watch. Amazon Canada has also disclosed the prices for the watches, the Watch4 will cost 310 CAD / CAD347 for the 40/44mm versions, the Watch4 Classic will go for CAD428 / CAD464 for the 42/46mm models, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy Buds2

Samsung’s new TWS headset, the Galaxy Buds2, will feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) with 3 microphones per earbud. Battery life for buds alone will be 5 hours with ANC, 8 hours without, the case will add 13/20 hours more. Charging the headphones for 5 minutes will give you almost an hour of listening time. Qi wireless charging will complement the USB-C port.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE not coming

We’ve seen renderings and specs for the Galaxy S21 FE, although the latest information we have is that the Fan Edition phone won’t launch until October. This means that there is no FE announcement during the Unpacked event.
