SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County will open vaccinations to new groups starting Saturday.

According to the county, education and child care workers, emergency service workers and those working in agriculture and food will be eligible for the vaccine starting this weekend.

The announcement puts the county into Phase 1B of the vaccination effort.

“We’re going to open up vaccines to about half a million San Diegans,” Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Wednesday. “There won’t be half a million appointments available on Saturday or Sunday or Monday or for many weeks to come,” Fletcher warned.

The county decided to open appointments for the vaccine after a lack of use of first-dose appointments by older people, Fletcher said.

Fletcher said vaccinations will be split between agencies to help administer vaccines among the newly announced groups:

  • Immunizations for Kindergarten to Grade 12 educators will be administered by the San Diego County Office of Education. Everyone else eligible for this group will go to the county vaccination website to make an appointment.
  • Vaccinations for emergency workers will also be managed through the county website. Scripps Health will provide assistance to vaccinate law enforcement officials.
  • Vaccinations for people in the food and agriculture category will be covered on the county website. CAL FIRE will help vaccinate farm workers on site.

Fletcher added that more than 783,000 vaccines have been administered so far in San Diego County. Of this total, nearly 68% of the elderly have been vaccinated. About 7.3% of the people of San Diegans have been fully immunized.

“We are getting vaccines in the guns at a very impressive rate,” Fletcher said.

San Diego County began receiving some of the roughly 80,000 vaccine doses delayed by the storm on Tuesday night, allowing the county to postpone any second missed doses and resume appointments for the first dose.
