A group of scientists have discovered traces of 280 million-year-old fossils in a remote area of the Grand Canyon, prior to the appearance of the earliest dinosaurs, according to a press release published in the National Park. Grand Canyon.
According to the press release, an international team of paleontologists has discovered "extremely well preserved tracks of primitive tetrapods (four-legged animals) that inhabited an ancient desert environment".
Paleontologists have recognized traces of fossils and claimed that they had been produced by a "long-extinct parent of very young reptiles … extinct tetrapods known as diadectomorphs, a primitive group with characteristics at once amphibians and reptiles "
The features of the newly discovered tracks suggest that the creature that imprinted prints walked on all four legs, each foot containing five "clawless digits".
"Although the manufacturer of the tracks for the Grand Canyon footprints is never unknown, the Grand Canyon trails preserve the course of a very ancient terrestrial vertebrate," the press release said.
