FREMONT, Calif .– As the holiday season begins and authorities warn residents to limit their interactions with other people outside their own households to curb the spread of the coronavirus, a tool developed by researchers at several universities lets see your risk of exposure to the virus at a gathering indoors.
The tool shows the estimated probability – between 0 and 100% – that you will meet at least one person with coronavirus during an event in your county. You can reduce the risk by wearing a mask, walking away and gathering outside in small groups, the researchers say.
As of Wednesday, if you attended an event with at least 15 people in Alameda County, there is an eight percent chance that someone in the group could expose you to the virus, according to the planning tool of Alameda. COVID-19 risk assessment. If your gathering has 10 people, that risk would be 6%.
Two professors from the Georgia Institute of Technology led the creation of the project, and their team included researchers from Stanford University and the Laboratory of Applied Bioinformatics.
“By default, we assume there are five times as many cases as reported,” the research team said in a statement. “In places where testing is less available, this bias may be higher.”

Alameda County is in the most restrictive purple tier of the state’s four-tier, color-coded COVID-19 risk system. That means indoor gatherings aren’t allowed here, but the state allows outdoor gatherings with a maximum of three households, and safety precautions such as wearing masks and keeping six feet tall. distance between other people who are not in your house.
Public health officials in Alameda County and the entire Bay Area recommend that people hold gatherings “small, short, stable, and safe” and ideally close enough to home to avoid long-distance travel.
The safest way to celebrate is with virtual or in-home gatherings, officials said.
There were 27,857 cases of COVID-19 reported in Alameda County as of Wednesday morning and 499 deaths have been linked to the virus. This is an increase from 27,065 cases a week ago, according to county data. No new deaths were reported last week.
Alameda County has recorded an average of seven new cases of COVID-19 per day over the past week. The test’s positivity rate has averaged 2.8% over the past week. This data is shifted by four days “to ensure enough time for accurate reports,” according to the county.
