The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police K-9 units will conduct a general search of the Rails to Trails system throughout the county this morning after the discovery of human remains last week in the city of Portland.
In a post on Facebook, the sheriff’s office said: “We respectfully ask the public to avoid the area throughout the day. We will update when our search is complete.
A hike came across remains on September 26 near part of the Rails to Trails system off Woleben Road in Portland. During the excavation of the site, a second set of human remains was recovered on September 27. Both sets are being analyzed by forensic experts in Erie, Pennsylvania.
