Smoking is prohibited in San Antonio's parks, the River Walk, the Market Square, the Villita and the Greenway trails starting June 1, according to a press release issued by the City of San Antonio.

On April 11, the city council voted in favor of the proposal, joining 52 other municipalities that adopted the same ban.

With the current ban, the city is promoting healthy lifestyle choices, said Xavier Urrutia, director of the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, in a statement.

"By adopting this policy, San Antonio is helping to reduce the rate of smoking in the community and demonstrates that our parks and public squares are where people go to improve their fitness and enjoy nature", Urrutia said.

Jennifer Herriott, acting director of health for the city, presented the proposal to council before her vote. She said the ban enjoyed strong support during community feedback sessions.

Offenders with a ban will have to pay a fine and signs will be placed in public squares in the coming days to remind visitors of the new law.
