The Pinterest social media platform no longer has results for vaccine research. The intention is to put an end to the anti-vaccination propaganda which, according to the government the Wall Street newspaper, is most content related to vaccination on Pinterest. The sentiment is noble and, as a private entity, Pinterest can block the search results as it sees fit. But this decision fits into a broader trend of maintaining order in social media content, and that is stupid.
There are some immediate problems: First, when you block a content category, you reject the good with the bad. Pinterest probably should not be your preferred resource for infectious disease prevention, but people apparently use it for this sort of thing. And those who do will no longer be able to find reliable vaccination information.
