Solar powered LightSail satellite ready for second flight

Although significant, the first LightSail flight only proved that the photon engine was viable. This flight will make things happen. The team plans to fly the craft in orbit around the Earth and test its maneuverability. In the end, the Planetary Society hopes to use the LightSail to propel Cubesat satellites into space. "It's a story in the making, LightSail 2 will fundamentally advance space flight technology," said Bill Nye, CEO of The Planetary Society.

The Falcon Heavy rocket is expected to be launched from Kennedy Space Center on June 24 in a four-hour window that will begin at 11:30 pm ET. If all goes as planned, in addition to the launch of LightSail 2, it will be the first night launch of Falcon Heavy.
