Emotional support animals are no longer free to roam the Southwest Airlines cabin.
The airline said Monday it would allow passengers to bring trained assistance dogs into the cabin, but will no longer accept support animals from March 1.
Customers who wish to bring a dog or cat on board as a pet will need to pay a fee, and the pet will need to be kept in a carrier that fits under an airplane seat.
The move follows a Transportation Department decision to overturn years-long regulations and let airlines ban pets that owners claim to provide emotional support. Airlines said some passengers abused the old rules to avoid pet fees.
Southwest is the latest of the nation’s six largest airlines to change its animal policy after the Department of Transportation’s action.
