Fremont High golfer Jack Wadsworth starts off at the 6A Boys Golf Tournament on Monday, October 4, 2021 at Davis Park Golf Course in Kaysville.
KAYSVILLE – Fremont junior Jack Wadsworth doesn’t eat breakfast on tournament days, so he was hungry to play well when he arrived at Davis Park Golf Course for the second round of the 6A State Championship on Tuesday.
Wadsworth feasted on the top nine, scoring an incredible 6 under par and when he birdied at number 10 he was tied for the lead, en route to a final lap 67.
“It sounded like a dream. I just wanted to keep going, try to keep my head in the game instead of being too over the top and did a good job most of the time, ”said Wadsworth.
With Wadsworth leading the team, Fremont placed third in the championship, landing at 582 (14 over par), while Lone Peak won it, with a team score of 560. (8 cents) and Corner Canyon finished second with an even par. 568.
After a first round of one in 72, Wadsworth finished at 139 (3 under), also good for third place individually, behind Lone Peak freshman winner Kihei Akina, who shot 136 (68, 68) and his teammate Cooper Jones, who registered at 138 (69, 69).
“Right before we started my coach (Broc Ballif) told the team that we had all played really well this year and that he was waiting for one of us to leave,” said Wadsworth. “I wondered why not be me, and I really played a good first nine, so I’m happy for that.”
His 6-under-6 forward nine also featured a hole-in-one on the long par-3 seventh.
“It was 222 (yards). There was a little wind coming from the left. I thought it was perfect for playing with my little melted baby that I had all day, ”said Wadsworth. “I pulled out a 5 iron and the ball ended up right at the hole. I expected him to unfold and that’s exactly what he did. I thought it was about 10 feet away, but I heard a relative scream that he had entered. It was just crazy.
Wadsworth remained tied with Akina when he dropped a 20-foot putt, which saves par on 14, but then the winds picked up and course conditions started to take their toll.
Davis Park had ridden the greens before the tournament and combined with hard concrete fairways, marked with more white paint than would be found at a crime scene, Wadsworth tripped with a three-putt double bogey at 15. .
Yet, with Akina in the same trio, he knew exactly where he was.
“I knew he was a competitor; my goal was to compete with him and win a state title, ”said Wadsworth. “It was great talking with him and learning from him. I look forward to teaming up with him in the future.
A bogey in 16 shattered any championship hopes, but Wadsworth nearly drove the 18th green and finished with a birdie.
“I worked really hard to get there. It’s obviously difficult to continue playing the way I was playing, ”said Wadsworth. “I felt a little bit of pressure, but I just had to keep playing solid, try to stay with him and stay focused as well as possible.”
The other players who ranked for Fremont were Jett Iverson 146 (70, 76), Chase Burton 148 (72, 76) and Luke Dalebout 149 (73, 76).
” We fought. Not quite the way we wanted to end today; a little moaning in there, ”said Fremont third-year coach Ballif. “The last four or five holes, we had some unfortunate rebounds. The wind picked up a bit which caused us to hit some shots that we wouldn’t normally do and cost us a few shots, but I’m really proud of them.
Layton won fourth place in the 6A tournament, with a team score of 588, led by Zak Richins 143 (70, 73, eighth overall), Cooper Cannon 145 (70.75), David Liechtenstein 149 (73, 76 ) and Spencer Poll 151 (77, 74).
Farmington was led by Luke Kelly 144 (73, 71, 10th overall) and finished sixth (594), Weber seventh (608) and Syracuse ninth (616).
Davis freshman Max Landon, playing as a freelance, tied Kelly for 10th, also at 144 (72, 72).
