State threatens to withhold funds from schools for mask warrant – Action News Jax

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – The Duval County Public School’s mask warrant policy is currently under investigation by the Florida Board of Education.

The state sent a letter to DCPS, addressed to Superintendent Diana Greene and Board Chair Elizabeth Anderson on Friday.

In the letter, Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran claims that the DCPS mask mandate violates Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order. The order of DeSantis requires that schools allow students not to wear a mask if their parent / guardian signs it.

Corcoran said if the district does not comply with the governor’s order, it will recommend that the State Department withhold funds equal to the salaries of all board members.

DCPS voted last week to apply a mask warrant that is expected to begin on September 7. In their mandate, students can only refuse to wear a mask if a doctor signs for a medical, physical or psychological reason.

Corcoran is demanding that the district respond in writing by 5 p.m. Wednesday with how they plan to comply with the governor’s orders.
