Of course, bacon has never been presented as a health food, but it may be even worse than you thought.

A new study found that even small amounts of red meat could increase the risk of bowel cancer, the BBC reported.

The researchers in this study, led by the Oxford University and funded by Cancer Research UK, analyzed data from nearly half a million people. According to their estimates, bacon consumption could increase the risk of cancer by 20%.

In the six years of study, researchers found that 2,609 people had developed bowel cancer. For each group of 10,000 people involved in the study who consumed 21 g of red and processed meat per day, 40 were diagnosed. For the prospect, a slice of ham represents about 23 g of processed meat.

According to Cancer Research UK, about 5,400 of the 41,804 cases of bowel cancer reported each year in the UK could be prevented if people cut out the processed meat entirely.

"This study shows that the more meat you eat, the higher your risk of developing cancer, and obviously the opposite is true. the less you eat, the less risk you have for bowel cancer, "said Emma Bields, head of information at Cancer Research UK.

So, what makes these meats so dangerous? According to the BBC, chemicals used in the manufacture of processed meat which includes bacon, hot dogs, salami and sausages – It is thought that this is the main suspect behind their carcinogenic tendencies.
