The ore from the LKAB iron mine may soon come to an end

LKAB's plan for several years is to make a major investment decision early in the next decade.

Several billion would be pumped into a new main level in the Kiruna Iron Mine. This meant that the new main level would be deeper than 2,000 meters.

A limited ore body

It now turns out that such an investment is not feasible. Indeed, the ore deposit in the Kiruna mine continues only to a limited extent from the current main level of 1365 meters to the depths.

"The perception has been that there is a persistent mineralized body that drops significantly below the 2000 meter level with a sustained area and geometry, and we can now see that only the ore has reached half of the main level. four kilometers, at 1365 meters altitude, and that there is only ore below 1365 meters in the most northerly part of the current main level. which show that the ore extends up to 2300 meters, "says Jan Moström to Di.

Hurry up on the mining rescue

Despite the dark exploration results, LKAB will try to save the Kiruna mine. But it is very urgent.

There is ore to break at the current main level until 2030-2035.

"The big question is whether we can do in-depth exploration so that the mine can continue to grow," Jan Moström told Di.
