Here are some of the measures proposed by the European Commission to reduce the amount of plastic in the sea:
* Prohibition of plastic in some products "if options are readily available and affordable". Applies to cotton spikes (cutlery), cutlery, plates, straws, shakers and balloon sticks, which will need to be made from more durable materials.
* Member States are obliged to reduce the use of food containers and cups through national reduction targets.
* Manufacturers should help cover the costs of waste management and cleaning of food containers, packaging (eg crisps and candies), cups, cigarette filters (including fimps), wipes wet, balloons and thin plastic bags.
* Manufacturers of plastic fishing gear must cover the costs of waste collection at port reception facilities, as well as the transport and treatment of waste.
