Norwegian has already held bases in the three Scandinavian capitals. Now the airline is building another base in Copenhagen and this time for airline pilots.
– Given the size of our long distance business in Scandinavia today, it is natural to establish a long distance base in Copenhagen. The Copenhagen base will simplify and strengthen our business and the creation of local workplaces, "said Helga Bollman Leknes, Norwegian director of human resources.
Kastrup is currently the airport of Scandinavia because the largest number of long-haul flights from New York, Oakland, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Bangkok and Krabi in Thailand. The routes, as well as other long lines to Scandinavia, have so far been piloted by pilots based mainly in the United States and Bangkok. The idea now is to create a single base for the Scandinavian Dreamliner pilots of the airline and that the 80 pilots who will have Kastrup as base will take over a part of the long-haul traffic from Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and Bergen.
Björn Kjos has long pointed to Arlanda as the perfect place for a long distance bus with traffic to Asia. But without progress in traffic rights negotiations along the so-called "Siberian" corridor, Stockholm is not a priority. Norwegian has also been very clear that the long-term Swedish air tax will hurt the airline's operations in Sweden. The flight tax is not included as a pronounced reason for the location of the base, but since the longest lines are the most heavily taxed, they have certainly been recorded.
Norway's increased focus on the Kastrup long-haul hub coincides with SAS's reasoning when it recently moved the Hong Kong line from Stockholm to Copenhagen. While this has mostly improved the schedule, there is also a flight tax. With an increasing number of long lines, Copenhagen can also reverse the fact that important transit passengers have decreased for a year in a row.
Norwegian currently has more than 200 pilots employed in Copenhagen and with 80 other pilots, some of whom will be recruited, the Norwegian will celebrate the presence of Kastrup. The nine remaining bases of the Dreamliner pilots are: Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, London, New York, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale and Bangkok.
