Nordea has been hot for a long time. This is the decision of the Bank of Sweden to criticize the lack of usability towards customers and, more recently, the money laundering charges. Bank President Björn Wahlroos was able to answer all the questions at the annual banking sector meeting.
– I think money laundering is a bad idea. As a bank, we are a payment platform that handles millions of transactions without having complete knowledge of all of them. But over the last ten years, we have worked hard to strengthen control, he said.
According to him, Nordea has a lot of resources, about half a billion euros (five million) to solve the problems. These include setting up new systems and tightening routines.
Nordea chairman Björn Wahlroos said many of the bank's customers had not chosen to visit us.
Björn Wahlroos is also chairman of the Finnish insurance company Sampo, which had previously sold its banking operations to Danske Bank. The part of the bank located in Estonia was subsequently revealed to be the place of money laundering in Russia.
"There was something that happened after the transfer and I do not share it," he says.
But, according to Björn Wahlroos, it is important that Russia's views have changed profoundly over the past decade. He does not want to develop the theme more closely, but it seems that it is the corruption that has penetrated from the east on different roads.
As for Nordeas from Sweden, the chairman of the board of directors of the bank did not have a choice. The decision was the best for the shareholders and therefore inevitable. But he would have liked to let Nordea keep the seat in Stockholm.
"The issue has been discussed for a number of years, including Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson, but it was not possible to find a suitable solution for the bank, and for us there was no other way. choice to move.
The main issue was the Swedish banking regulations, which Nordea can afford to be cheaper by having its headquarters in Finland, which is part of the European Banking Union. This implies lower requirements than in Sweden.
Swedish customers from Nordea is not very satisfied, as evidenced by various measures. Björn Wahlroos admits that the bank is not perceived positively in Sweden:
"This is partly because Nordea is the result of mergers." Many of the bank's clients have not chosen to come to see us, he says.
