In most countries of the world, cannabis is still banned, including in Sweden. Swedish drug law prohibits all contact with drug-based preparations, such as cannabis.
But a number of countries are now discussing relaxation rules or have already introduced them.
Uruguay has legalized the cultivation, sale and smoking of marijuana. Canada followed and decided last summer that a legalization would be carried out on October 17 of this year.
In the United States, the drug is banned at the federal level. But about half of the states have created their own rules. In at least eight American states, cannabis is allowed or in the process of being, including in the larger population, California. A number of others, including the third most populous Florida, approve of medical use.
Many other countries allow marijuana in certain circumstances. In the EU, Denmark and Portugal have recently changed the rules in a more permissive way.
