The European Commission wants to strengthen the control of Listeria in pre-cooked frozen vegetables. The reason for this is the large outbreak of listeriosis in five countries caused by frozen corn and vegetable mixtures that has killed several people.

It was confirmed that it was frozen corn, possibly other vegetables grown in Hungary and processed in Hungary Poland, the origin of the epidemic , writes on its website the European Food Authority EFSA. Samples show that the bacterium has survived in the Hungarian factory for several years. The current products of the factory have been stopped.

In total, 47 people died between 2015 and June 2018, and nine died. The epidemic has affected Austria, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain and Sweden. In Sweden, maize has reached the market only for large-scale households, reports the Swedish Food Administration.

Up to now, listeria has mainly been linked to vacuum packed salmon and sandwiches. "Listeria in frozen vegetables is so new to us," says a press release from the Swedish Administration of Food.

According to the European Commission, quick-frozen shelled vegetables are considered ready for consumption. Therefore, the companies that manufacture and handle them should follow the rules applicable to other edible foods and regularly check that there is no listeria in the products, the Commission believes.
