New research findings show that the Norwegian variant of CWD, which primarily affects deer and deer moose, is not related to the North American type.
The conclusion that there are different types of MDC, the chronic debilitating disease, stems from experiments conducted by Norway on rats.
The disease has appeared in Norway, where, among other things, the slaughter of a large number of reindeer in the Nordfjella region to halt the spread of infection remains a mystery.
"How Norway received the CWD, it is not possible today to comment on the facts," said Jörn Våge, coordinator of the CWD at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, in a statement.
No cases in Sweden
When the disease was first discovered in Norwegian wildlife, it was thought that the same infection existed in North America. The fall in Norway was the first outside of North America and South Korea, where the disease was also noted.
In Sweden and as part of an EU project, work is underway to determine the possible spread of the disease. So far, no cases have been found in Sweden, but in Finland.
