Valsartan of a Chinese manufacturer has been found to contain a contamination that for a long time may cause a slightly increased risk of cancer. However, patients taking valsartan are not encouraged to stop it.
"For a given patient, it may be more risky to stop treatment quickly than to continue taking the drug until you take a new package to the pharmacy," The Pharmaceutical Agency writes in a statement.
The drugs in question have names that contain some of the words "Valtsu", "Valsartan" or "Valsartore." See the complete list of drugs removed here.
The manufacturing process that caused the pollution has been used by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals since 2012.
Valsartan drugs available at the pharmacy in the future will not have the contamination in question.It is advisable for anxious patients to consult a doctor to obtain advice.
