European Medicines Agency EMA Safety Committee The PRAC recommends updating information on products containing hydrochlorothiazide, HCTZ. The reason for this is two new studies indicating an increased risk of basal cell cancer and skin disc skin cancer in patients treated with HCTZ for a longer period.
Both studies analyzed data from the Danish Cancer Registry and the Pharmaceutical Register. Studies show a cumulative dose-dependent association between HCTZ and skin cancer without melanoma. The photosensitizing effects of HCTZ may be a possible mechanism for the observed forms of skin cancer.
