Now that the summer is the peak season of sunscreen products. A new audit of the Swedish Medicines Agency shows that many sunscreens have significant deficiencies in both the validation and instructions on how to use them.
– The audit showed that 3 of the 11 products were insufficiently effective and that 7 of the 11 products lacked instructions for safe use, which is serious. We demanded that these products be corrected or removed from the market, says Charlotte Björkbäck investigator at the Medical Products Agency in a press release, reports Aftonbladet.
In the press release the Swedish Medicines Agency stresses that it is important that sunscreen produces the sunscreen effect that the product claims to have. Companies that import or manufacture sunscreens from a third country are responsible for the proof of the effect of the product.
The product should include a user manual in Swedish indicating to the consumer the sun protection that the product gives, the amount to be used by the consumer and whether the product produces low, medium, high or very high sun protection . While the consumer can easily choose the right protection. 7 of the 11 tested products were missing. The Medical Products Agency says it will continue to give priority to verifications of sunscreen products since it has an important protective function.
