Pancreatic beta cells form the hormone insulin regulates the levels of blood sugar in the body. But in diabetes, beta cells have lost their function completely or partially.
As blood glucose levels increase, calcium ion levels increase in beta cells, which stimulates the release of insulin.
– Our results indicate that this particular element in the calcium channel may be a new target for the treatment of diabetes. -Olof Berggren, who heads the research group at KI, in a press release
