According to figures from the Riksstroke Quality Register, 600 people fell last year compared to the previous year, where 26,500 were affected.

As an explanation, prevention is mainly emphasized, primarily that atrial fibrillation – a risk factor for stroke – is detected and managed.

"It's an extremely pleasant effect, as we see, but stroke is still a serious disease, for which further efforts are needed," said Bo Norrving, head of Riksstroke.

The trend of reduced stroke cases remained in the 21st century. Stroke is a brain injury caused by blood clots or bleeding in the brain.
