Rusal, the world's second-largest aluminum producer after the Chinese Hongqiao, is part of the entrepreneurial empire of the oligarch sanctioned by the US Oleg Deripasa, including the holding company EN -more. Deripaska and eight companies he owns are threatened by US sanctions last spring.
Due to the threat to Rusal, Kubal, which has around 500 employees in Sundsvall, is threatened with closure. Swedish Trade Minister Ann Linde (S) is awaiting clarification from the US government after the mid-term congressional elections.
The new CEO, Evgenij Nikitin, has been acting CEO since May and was previously head of Rusal Aluminum Manufacturing.
Rusal and EN-plus, who received a new chief executive last Friday, have since recruited a number of unrelated executives and administrators to persuade the United States to drop sanctions.
The United States has repeatedly imposed sanctions to possibly exempt Rusal. According to the latest Trumpregering announcement, sanctions will be imposed on 12 December.
